Hanoi Medical University is the oldest university of Vietnam located in Hanoi. It is often abbreviated as HMU. Hanoi Medical University was found in the year 1902. The university was founded by French during the French colonisation. At that time the name of the university was Indochina Medical College. The first headmaster of Hanoi Medical University was Alexandre Yersin. He was the co-discoverer of the bacillus that was responsible for the bubonic plague or pest. This bacillus was later re-named in his honor and is known today as Yersinia pestis.

Founded in the year 1902, the Hanoi Medical University has over a hundred year of eventful history. The university was founded in the year 1902 as Indochina Medical College by the french colonists. It was the first modern university in Vietnam. Hanoi Medical University is also the second of all universities in Vietnam. The Temple of Literature offcourse is regarded as the first university of Vietnam. This medical university was at first located in Le Thanh Tong street. At that time 108 hospital, which was the practice hospital at that time was situate next to it. Later in the year 1961 Hanoi University of Pharmacy was separated from HMU. This new university took residence in the old campus. Hanoi Medical University then was moved to a new campus in Ton That Tung street. This is the cureent address of the university. This campus is situated next to the largest hospital in the city which is known as Bach Mai Hospital. It has also offices in Viet Duc Hospital.

HMU is considered the most famous medical university in Vietnam. The exam to enter the university is very competitive. In the past, it was the only medical university that recruited students in all Vietnam. Medical students who study in this university has a brighter prospect.

Education System in Myanmar

The educational system of Myanmar is operated by the government Ministry of Education. Universities as well as professional institutes from upper Myanmar as well as lower Myanmar are run by two separate entities. The entities are known as the Departments of Higher Education that operates both in Lower Myanmar and Upper Myanmar. the office headquarters of this department are based in Yangon and Mandalay respectively. The education system of Myanmar is based on the education system of United Kingdom. The reason behind this is that the country has been under the British rule for almost a century. The Christian presence in Myanmar have also influenced the education system of Myanmar.

In Myanmar almost all schools are operated by the government. However in recent times there has been a steady increase in the number of Privately ran schools. These schools generally specialize in English. For every person schooling up to the elementary school is compulsory. The elementary schooling age is 9 years while at the international level the compulsory schooling age is 15 or 16.

According the UNESCO Institute of Statistics (2005) the literacy rate of Myanmar stands at 89.7%. the literacy rate among the male are 93.7% while the literacy rate among their female counterpart is lesser than that – about 86.2%. However there is a dispute over the accuracy of the literacy rate provided in that statistics. The government of Myanmar allocates a low budget for the education department. In the schools of Myanmar English is taught as a second language from kindergarten.

Apart from being the capital of vietnam Hanoi is also the main center for education in the country. the city is home to a number of educational institutes ranging from primary schools of institutes for advanced learning and education. There are a number of universities in the city that have carved their niche in the world of education. Students from different parts of Vietnam come to Hanoi for higher education. The universitites of Hanoi are also prefered by many international students.

Hanoi is the largest centre of education in Vietnam. approximately 62 % of the scientists in the whole country are living as well as working in Hanoi. In Hanoi the admission process to undergraduate study are done through entrance examinations. These entrance examinations which are conducted annually. Generally these examinations are open for every student who has successfully completed his or her secondary education. Most of the universities in Hanoi are public universities. However, in recent years a number of private universities have also been established in the city. Thang Long university, is the first private university in Vietnam. It was founded in the year 1988, by some Vietnamese mathematics professors in Hanoi and France.

As many of Vietnam's major universities are located in Hanoi, students from other provinces who wish to enter university generally come to the capital city to sit for the annual entrance examination. Such events often take place in June and July. During this time during which a large number of students and their families come to the city for several weeks around this intense examination period. In recent years, these entrance exams have been centrally coordinated by the Ministry of Education, but passing marks are decided independently by each university.
