Hanoi Medical University

Hanoi Medical University is the oldest university of Vietnam located in Hanoi. It is often abbreviated as HMU. Hanoi Medical University was found in the year 1902. The university was founded by French during the French colonisation. At that time the name of the university was Indochina Medical College. The first headmaster of Hanoi Medical University was Alexandre Yersin. He was the co-discoverer of the bacillus that was responsible for the bubonic plague or pest. This bacillus was later re-named in his honor and is known today as Yersinia pestis.

Founded in the year 1902, the Hanoi Medical University has over a hundred year of eventful history. The university was founded in the year 1902 as Indochina Medical College by the french colonists. It was the first modern university in Vietnam. Hanoi Medical University is also the second of all universities in Vietnam. The Temple of Literature offcourse is regarded as the first university of Vietnam. This medical university was at first located in Le Thanh Tong street. At that time 108 hospital, which was the practice hospital at that time was situate next to it. Later in the year 1961 Hanoi University of Pharmacy was separated from HMU. This new university took residence in the old campus. Hanoi Medical University then was moved to a new campus in Ton That Tung street. This is the cureent address of the university. This campus is situated next to the largest hospital in the city which is known as Bach Mai Hospital. It has also offices in Viet Duc Hospital.

HMU is considered the most famous medical university in Vietnam. The exam to enter the university is very competitive. In the past, it was the only medical university that recruited students in all Vietnam. Medical students who study in this university has a brighter prospect.
